Amol Hatwar’s perspectives on art, culture, business, science and technology

Outliers Review

There might be more to success and successful people than just talent, hard work and luck. Malcom Gladwell, the best selling author of Blink and The Tipping Point explores many factors that may have a big hand in personal success in his new book: Outliers. Like his previous works, Outliers is fun to read and the language is simple enough for a layman.

Malcom Gladwell challenges the conventional logic of the self-made man quite convincingly by giving real-life stalwarts as an example. He covers how the talent and hard work of Bill Joy (Sun Microsystems), Bill Gates (Microsoft) got more bang because they were in the right place at the right time with the right kind of family background and environment.

The book also goes on to analyze how societies and cultures develop their own characteristic behaviors and habits many of which might be totally irrelevant and harmful today. One poignant example goes on to show why Asian kids are much better in Mathematics than children from other cultures.

All said and done, I feel this book is definitely on its way to become another bestseller. While the book was not an eye-opener for me, it was definitely entertaining. Some may have a hard time believing that they do not control their own success more than external factors.
